  6. The noise level in the power plant is very loud. Ear plugs will be issued.

Orrville has been generating electricity since 1917. Today, Orrville has 4 operating boilers: two stokers, a Riley and a Babcock & Wilcox, and 2 pulverized coal units by Combustion Engineering. The Babcock & Wilcox boiler was built in 1957 and is capable of producing 160,000 lbs. of steam per hour. There are three operating generators: a 1960 Allis Chalmers 22 MVA unit, and two 1940 Westinghouse 31.25 MVA units.

For your own safety, and for the safety of power plant personnel, please observe the following:

  1. Do not enter any area marked off with yellow caution tape.
  2. Do not touch any equipment unless expressly permitted to do so.
  3. Hard hats and safety glasses are required, and will be issued for the tour. If you wear prescription glasses, please ensure that they are safety rated or can accommodate safety glasses to be placed over them.

...and now a word from our Chair
March, 2008

I would like to congratulate our 50-year members, Roy L. (“Pete”) Orndorff, Jr., P.E. and John T. Pope, P.E. whom I had the honor of recognizing at our January Joint meeting with Akron ASME/Akron ASM Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Akron's New Era Restaurant along with the other service awards. They deserve this great recognition for all of their years of contributions to our society and the engineering field in general. I would also like to thank Mr. James Tanzosh, Manager of Materials and Manufacturing Technology for the Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group, Inc. for his informative presentation "Materials Challenges for the Advanced Ultra-Supercritical Boiler." Judging from the fact that we were busting out of the seams at the New Era, I know that our members thought that it was interesting and relevant to many of our interests.

We also had a great turnout for the National Engineers Week Banquet held at Emidio & Sons on February 21st, 2008. It was our Akron Section of ASME's turn to serve as Host Society and thanks to Brent Sisler, P.E., this year's Banquet Chair, the event was a total success. Great job, Brent!

Our upcoming schedule is packed with activities from our Student Papers Night (March 13th, 2008), the ACESS Joint Member Societies Meeting (March 20th, 2008), and the Industry Expo (April 8th, 2008), to our tour of the City of Orrville's Power Plant (May 14th, 2008). As you can see, our local Akron Section Board has been quite busy planning events that we hope that you will find of interest. Details of all of these meetings can be found elsewhere in this Newsletter. We hope to see you there!

As many of you know, we are always looking for active participation from our members in helping to plan and execute our activities. We welcome any of you to attend our monthly board meetings. Please contact us for meeting times and places so that you can give us any input that you may have. This is your section and you don't have to be an official board member to be a part of the planning process.

In closing, I would like to personally invite each of you to come to one of our activities. We make them fun and interesting and it is a great place to network with others that might have interests similar to yours.

Akron ASME speakers needed in high schools

The Akron Section of ASME is about to begin a project to put engineers in contact with area high school students. A need that has been made known to us is that the amount of graduating high-school students going on to study science and engineering is down in the Akron area.

Akron ASME is attempting to develop a pool of engineers that would be willing and able to go to a school for anywhere from a half hour to a couple of hours, based on their schedule, and speak to high school classes. The format is anything from an informal talk with a science classroom to a PowerPoint presentation to a group of students enrolled in science classes.

We have a new "What is a Mechanical Engineer?" brochure from national ASME that makes such a visit very easy for someone willing to go into the schools. We have hundreds of copies on hand, ready to give to you. We have it as a *.pdf, too, if you'd like to take a look.

If you would be interested in getting involved with this program and helping educate students about science and engineering fields, please contact Cara Adams at caraadams302@yahoo.com.

Thanks for considering it!

Akron ASME Newsletter

As you probably know by now, due to cost considerations, Akron ASME has had to stop mailing hardcopy newsletters. So, it becomes increasingly important that we have a correct email address for you.

If we have an incorrect email address for you and you have not received an email notice regarding our newsletter, please email Matt Pruszynski at matt@americashobbyhouse.com with your correct email address. You will get periodic notices from him announcing:

  1. upcoming events;
  2. updating of our Akron ASME website;
  3. posting of our updated newsletter to that website as an Adobe Acrobat *.pdf for your viewing, printing, and/or download.

Please let me (Brent Sisler, 330/836-9238 or marybrentsisler@cs.com) know if this does not work for you. Thanks for your patience and understanding as we move to this new paperless regime.
